The UPSC Centre for Forest Biotechnology was funded between 2017 and 2022 and combined scientific knowledge generated at the University with practical industrial applications. Its main aim was to conduct top-class basic research in plant science and translate it into innovations with commercial potential.

The Center was part of the Competence Center program of the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems – VINNOVA (https://www.vinnova.se/m/kompetenscentrum/), which was established to enhance the strength of the Swedish industry to keep Sweden on a competitive basis. The UPSC Center for Forest Biotechnology was a continuation of the UPSC Berzelii Centre for Forest Biotechnology (2007 – 2016) and had two University partners and seven industrial partners. Several projects at the centre run in close collaboration between those partners.
