Which kind of plants have people eaten thousand years ago and how did they prepare their food? How does the pollen look like that causes allergies and how have the plants we eat developed over time? Find out what is the plant’s favourite food, discover their bacterial and fungal neighbours and be amazed at how different plants can look like. On the 21st of May, we invite you to a day filled with different activities around plants and plant research. Pass by and get fascinated!

At the Fascination of Plants Day, plant scientists will present their favourite plants, you can take a look into the underground life watching plant roots and their fungal friends, test how elastic plants are and do many more experiments.

Bonsaisällskapet will show bonsai trees from our forest trees and the Friends of Arboretum Norr will present the diversity of trees and bushes growing at the arboretum in Baggböle and that derive from different parts of the world. You can find all activities following the below programme link. Our mascot Flora will welcome you!

Umeå Plant Science Centre together with Curiosum, Umeå University and SLU are arranging the Fascination of Plants Day in Umeå. It is an international event and will be celebrated all over the world. More than 500 scientific institutions, universities, botanical gardens in more than 50 countries will open their doors to visitors.

Come and become part of this world-wide event and be amazed at the fascinating world of plants!

Title: The regulatory role of GABA during dark-induced leaf senescence in Arabidopsis thaliana

The UPSC employee survey identified stress and recovery as an important area to focus on and now we are taking some steps to address the problem.
 
Our occupational health care provider will give a lecture on the topic on the 13th of June at 09.00 – 10.15 in the Carl Kempe salen.
 
The lecture will include information about long-term and short-term stress, the importance of recovery in everyday life (private and at work), what happens in the body during stress and recovery, practical strategies to slow down, take control of what you yourself can influence and let go of what you cannot influence. Interactive features such as breathing exercises and shorter question and answer sessions are also included.
 
Everyone at UPSC is welcome and encouraged to attend!

This workshop will focus on how to navigate the Swedish job market and job searching process as an international. We will handle questions such as how to adapt your CV, how to build a network and make use of it, how to approach potential employers and how to plan a transition from academia to the business world. Felicitas Rabiger is a career and intercultural trainer who is both German and Swedish, having lived in Sweden for the past 15 years with dual citizenship. She has extensive experience within adult education and education management, facilitating intercultural training, career coaching and partner support as well as teaching intercultural competence development within the American study abroad sector.

Have you ever wondered what it does look like inside the greenhouse on top of the roof? On Saturday, 19th of October between 13:00 and 16:00 o’clock, we at Umeå Plant Science Centre will open our doors for you and celebrate the 7th Fascination of Plants Day!

Learn more about the research we do at Umeå Plant Science Centre, try out your experimental skills and test your plant knowledge. You will also get the chance to take a look inside the greenhouse and other facilities within Umeå Plant Science Centre following guided tours.

Pass by and celebrate with us the fascinating world of plants!

You will find us close to Café KBC which will be open during the event.

Preliminary Programme:

All activities and tours are free of charge and will be mostly in English!

Activities:

• Fruits, veggie’s and more - Test your plant knowledge in our plant quiz
• The plant’s superpower – How can a couple of plant cells give rise to an entire new plant?
• Find the culprit – discover the plants’ microbial neighbourhood and identify the hostile neighbours
• Nature’s Palette – separate the colours hidden in green leaves
• Print your microscope – How can 3D printing help to make science more open?
• Transforming sunlight into sugars – how can we measure photosynthesis?
• How steady is your hand? Test your seeding skills under lab conditions

Guided tours:

We will offer every tour once per hour at 13:15, 14:15 and 15:15 and they will last about 30min.

• Visit the greenhouse on top of the roof and get to know the plants we are researching with
• Discover the inside of plant cells and look through our advanced microscopes
• Learn about how it is to be a researcher in a lab and test your pipetting skills
• Take a look on our in vitro aspen nursery and learn how we modify trees

Please note: The number of participants to the tours will be limited to 10. No pre-registration is possible before the start of the event. Place will be given on a ‘first come, first served’ basis!
