We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to join our ongoing research project to characterize the widespread non-coding transcription of RNA Polymerase II (RNAPII). The postdoctoral candidate is expected to use traditional and novel molecular biology tools to further shed light on the phenomenon of non-coding transcription in plants.

Last day to apply is 20th of September, 2020.

Project description

Organisms must interact favourably with their environment and the blueprint to do so is in their DNA. While our understanding of DNA units that code for proteins is robust, the bulk of DNA in higher eukaryotes does not code for proteins. Importantly, novel genomic technologies have recently found that many of these mysterious non-coding regions are dynamically transcribed (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1093/nar/gkz1189). But how is widespread non-coding transcription regulating the output of coding transcription and how does non-coding transcription determine the stress response in plants?

Research environment

The postdoctoral fellow will work in the group of Peter Kindgren (www.upsc.se/peter_kindgren). Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is a Centre of Excellence in experimental plant biology, located in northern Sweden. UPSC comprises approximately 200 researchers, from more than 40 countries, working on a variety of key issues in plant biology, including root and shoot development, flowering, biotic and abiotic stress responses and wood formation. UPSC has excellent, world-class laboratories and associated facilities for genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microscopy, plant growth and genetic manipulation.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a PhD degree in molecular biology or any other relevant field. Previous experience from research in plant molecular biology will be considered as a merit. Good knowledge of English in both speaking and writing is a prerequisite. Candidates should also have an ability to initiate, plan, and work in team and independently.

Application

The tax-free stipend is granted for 2 years and amounts to 25000 SEK per month. The employment will start in late 2020 or by agreement. Interested applicants should submit the application in English and provide the following documents:

  1. 1) Cover letter demonstrating the applicants motivation and interest in the topic (max 2 pages)
  2. 2) C.V., including the list of your published work, and names and contact information for two references
  3. 3) Certificate of academic merit or a copy / link to the applicant's doctoral dissertation.
