The Assembly of the Prolamellar Body Membrane
Biologicheskie Membrany: 1994 11:249-252
The prolamellar body is formed by a continuous tubular membrane separating the etioplast stroma from the prolamellar body lumen. The tubes form different branching structures. Most common prolamellar body membrane structure is a structure where four tubes meet at equal angle, forming a tetrahedral unit. A less common structure is formed by six tubes that meet at right angles in a cubic structure. The reason for the assembly of the prolamellar body membrane is not known. In this presentation the arguments for that the prolamellar body has a membrane in a cubic phase structure are discussed.
