Phd position for a Chemist / Biologist (MSc) Print E-mail
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to be involved in research to explore wood as a feedstock for energy and novel materials in bio refineries. The position is placed within the Swedish strategic research effort Bio4Energy (www.bio4energy.se) that includes leading research environments at Umeå University, Swedish University of agricultural Sciences (SLU), Luleå University, Innventia and the industry cluster Processum in Örnsköldvik. This gives you the exciting possibility to be part of an interdisciplinary network, where you are exposed to research along the whole value chain from feedstock to product.

You will be affiliated to Umeå Plant Science Center (UPSC, www.upsc.se) at SLU, a world-leading center in experimental plant biology and forest biotechnology. UPSC is a vibrant research environment with about 200 scientists from 35 countries, and with ample international projects and collaborations. It holds all relevant technical platforms for advanced biological and chemical science, and internationally leading scientists that carry out research in a wide array of plant biology topics

You will be employed as a PhD student for 4 years, with an initial preparatory period to implement initial studies and plan the work in detail. Your project will be to explore chemical and structural aspects of wood and secondary cell walls. By investigating genetically modified plants, you help to draft the blueprint of biomass production on a molecular scale. Concurrently, the new established knowledge is applied to develop biomass production systems with valuable properties for existing and future applications in bio refineries.

Initially you will apply a range of standard analytical techniques to a set of genetically modified aspen trees With collaborators within Bio4enrgy, you will assess the determined bulk properties in respect to a variety of established and future refining processes. Further on you will cooperate with molecular biologists that study the function of the underlying genes. By highly localized chemical microanalysis, you help to develop and test models for explaining cell wall biosynthesis down to the molecular scale. Here, the analytical methods are highly specialized and you will develop or adapt methods dependent on the biological question to answer. Available technical equipment includes wet chemical labs, chromatography (LC, IC, GC, SEC), mass-spectrometry (LC, GC, MALDI) and spectroscopy (NMR, FTIR, Raman). Facilities hosting relevant microscopy techniques are in-house accessible within UPSC.

Qualifications
You should have a high degree of self-motivation, a genuine interest to work with research on wood as a feedstock, and you should be excited about experimental work using advanced instrumentation. You should be a reliable team player, but also be able to work independently in your own field of expertise.

To be eligible, you need an MSc degree in either chemistry or biology. Further, we expect a good command of English, the working language in our research group. Your application should contain a personal letter of motivation, CV and 3 references.

Forms for funding or employment
Employment as PhD student 4 years
