Masters programme in Plant and Forest Biotechnology at UPSC |
|
|
Course codes: Umeå University, UMU-M5008.
Ethanol and biofuel production, modification of tree fibres, increased plant tolerance to diseases and environmental stresses, as well as the development of functional foods, are examples of research areas in biology and biotechnology that will have a large impact on our society in the future. Plant biotechnology is becoming increasingly important as a tool to solve some of the global problems related to food, fuel and ecosystem management by environmentally friendly and sustainable means.
The Master of Science Programme in Plant and Forest Biotechnology offers students chances to acquire stateof-the-art competence and skills to understand and find solutions to these challenges. The programme is organized by UPSC, and the education is anchored around the research topics in which UPSC researchers are world leaders, such as plant developmental biology, forest biotechnology, wood formation and hormone biology.
The programme is based upon coordinated courses, which together amount to 120 ECTS credits spread over two years and are given in English.
Up-to-date knowledge is provided about plant cell and molecular biology, as well as plant growth and development. This is applied in the fields of plant breeding, biotechnology and functional genomics.
The programme is open to students with a BSc in biology, biotechnology, forestry or agriculture. After finishing this programme the students will be prepared to work in society, industry or academia dealing with tasks that require knowledge.
The programme is intended to provide the students with:
- Theoretical and practical knowledge about plant physiology, molecular biology, biotechnology and functional genomics.
- Understanding about ethical, ecological and legal aspects of plant biotechnology.
- Contacts with agricultural and forestry biotechnology companies.
- Knowledge on how to design, perform and report scientific experiments.
- Preparation for graduate studies

Master thesis work announcementMaster thesis work is the final part of the programme, and required for obtaining the Master of Science degree. The Master thesis work is based on independent research work and should contain novel research results that are of importance for the research field in question. Master thesis work can be done at any university or in an industrial laboratory as long as the research topic resides within the fields of plant physiology, molecular biology, biotechnology or functional genomics. The department appoints a supervisor for every Master thesis worker even if the work is performed in an industrial laboratory. For acceptance of the exam work, please go to the rule to present your Master thesis work. Access the proposed subjects of the master thesis workhttp://www.upsc.se/Education-Undergraduate/Undergraduate-Students/suggested-exam-work-projects.html

Guidelines to prepare and present the Master thesis work The Master thesis work documents the thesis project carried out by the candidate and follows the format of a scientific publication. As such it is divided into Introduction, Results, Discussion, Materials and Methods and References sections. The candidate must ensure that the final version of the thesis manuscript reaches members of the evaluation committee at least 10 days prior planned date of defence. Members of the evaluation committee are Karin Ljung, Laszlo Bako, Anita Sellstedt, Edouard Pesquet and the supervisor of the Master thesis project. At the defence candidate is expected to present the work in frame of a 15-20 min oral presentation which is followed by questions from members of the evaluation commettee. The final grade of the Master thesis work will reflect quality of the work as well as that of the manuscript and oral presentation.
