All PhD students of UPSC belong to the UPSC graduate school. The graduate school is co-ordinated by Anders Eriksson and Hannele Tuominen . One of the major challenges UPSC faces is to provide the best possible research-training environment for our PhD students. For 15 years, our researchers have organized the main part of our graduate program in the form of research schools, enabled through substantial external funding. The aim is to provide PhD education of the highest international standard, with a focus on both scientific and personal development. The PhD students will be prepared for a career in science or society and for leading positions in industry, academia and public authorities. Courses, workshops and seminar series are offered, in which graduate students are integrated into an interactive scientific environment. Our PhD program gives graduate students the unique opportunity to gain insights into state- of-the-art techniques and the latest developments in our main research areas. By inviting leading external scientists to participate in teaching, we also give PhD students the possibility to create scientific networks at local, national and international levels. In addition, courses aiming at promoting personal development and leadership skills are offered. The graduate program is completed with site visits at other research institutes and companies that operate laboratories related to our main research areas.

The annual program of our research school covers:
- Techniques – theory and practice
- Thematic courses/workshops/seminars
- Personal development and leadership training
- Site visits to companies and laboratories
Our goal is to create a stimulating and interactive research environment in which the research school plays a central role, even for external scientists and key players in industry and the economy. With its internationally highly recognised scientists as teachers, the research schools have become meeting points, not only for the PhD students, but also for other scientists, thus helping to create a highly interactive and stimulating milieu. By training our doctoral students in scientific networking, we increase the use of multi-technique and multi-disciplinary approaches and show the students the potential and possibilities of multi- disciplinarity for solving their scientific questions. UPSC is integrated into the Chemical Biological Centre (KBC) that operates several technical platforms. By applying and developing state-of-the-art techniques and methods, these core facilities play an important role in the training of our graduate students. PhD students who wish to deepen their knowledge of specific methods and techniques are given the opportunity to participate in courses with a focus on ‘hands-on training’ at the instruments. Presently, UPSC researchers participate in an interdisciplinary research school, combining chemistry, geology, and life sciences. All institutes representing these disciplines are located under the same roof in the KBC, which today has more than 500 employees. KBC is offering a training program for 200 PhD students, 50 of whom belong to UPSC. Every year around 45 PhD students are graduating, and the same numbers of new PhD students are starting their graduate research at KBC.
