Welcome to UPSC Berzelii Centre for Forest Biotechnology Print E-mail
UCFB is one of four so-called Berzelii centre, financed via a unique collaboration between Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (VINNOVA) and the Swedish Research Council (VR).
The Berzelii centra are performing excellent basic research, but with clear ideas about possible applications and in close collaboration with industry.

The UPSC Berzelii Centre for Forest Biotechnology is one of the world’s strongest research environments in areas of relevance for forest biotechnology applications. The research efforts have been focused, in the efforts of so-called task forces (Fig. 1.), on three focal areas concerned with the basic biology and chemistry underlying important traits in forest trees. Research examples include the study of how the growth and nutrient uptake of trees is regulated, how the wood is formed and acquires different properties and how the tree adapts to the annual cycle of growth and dormancy. This research will provide us with new tools and understanding in order to enhance tree growth and biomass production, to breed trees with enhanced wood properties tailored for specific end uses and to adapt trees to a changing climate.

The Centre has six industrial partners: Sveaskog, Holmen Skog, Bergvik Skog, Stora Enso, SweTree Technologies and Syngenta Seeds. Together with these partners, various more applied collaboration projects are being conducted. These include investigations of new methods for nutrient supply to forests and forest nurseries, somatic embryogenesis in spruce, tree resistance to the pine weevil and plantations of hybrid aspens and poplars.
The Centre is planned to be active from 2007 to 2016 and will have a turnover of more than 200 million SEK, of which one half is funded by VR and VINNOVA and the other half is matching funding from SLU, Umeå University and the industrial partners.
During its lifetime, the centre will be welcoming new industrial partners interested in finding out how new plant and forest biotechnology knowledge and innovations can be applied in their respective areas.
